On the evening of March 10th, I experienced something I had never seen before.
Back in Ukraine, I was used to different weather, but I had never faced a true American storm-and certainly not hail of this magnitude. It was a surreal moment for my family. While we were safe inside our home in Woodridge, Illinois, the sound of ice stones hitting the roof was deafening.
Watching from the window was painful. Without a garage, our family cars were sitting ducks. The hail, some the size of ping-pong balls, was merciless. I later heard that closer to Chicago, it was baseball-sized, and areas like Kankakee were hit even harder.
The next morning, the reality set in. Dents on the hoods, pockmarked roofs, and a cracked windshield on my daughter’s car. A few days later, a water stain appeared on our bedroom ceiling. The storm was gone, but the damage was very real.

The Business Response: A Race Against Time
What surprised me most was the speed of the local business response. Within 24 hours, my Facebook feed and my physical mailbox were overflowing with flyers from roofing contractors and paintless dent repair shops.
As a web developer with over 15 years of experience, I couldn’t help but look at these companies from a professional perspective. I started visiting their websites, and what I found was eye-opening.
Out of a dozen sites I checked on my smartphone:
- Only one loaded quickly and clearly showed how to request a free estimate.
- Most were painfully slow, which is a “deal-breaker” when a homeowner is stressed and looking for immediate help.
- Contact forms were buried, and phone numbers weren’t easy to find on the first screen.
Your Website is Not a Brochure – It’s a Rescue Tool
When a storm hits Woodridge or Plainfield, your future customer is standing in their driveway, holding a phone, looking at a leaking roof. They don’t have the patience to wait for a slow site to load. They need a “Call Now” button and a simple “Get an Estimate” form.
This experience proved once again: in the contracting world, your website is your most important tool. It’s the bridge between a homeowner’s crisis and your solution. If that bridge is broken or hard to find, they will cross another one.
